Preston Sturges
The Austin Film Society screened Preston Sturges's
Sullivan's Travels at the Texas Union Theater in Austin, Texas (Tuesday, February 1, 2000). Here are
some impressions. (Others are also welcome to submit theirs. See page bottom).
nan(d:o) had this to say: Ezra Pound, the putative father of post-modernism, is quoted as having said, "Beware of the adjective!"
After watching a film by Preston Sturges like this one, lots of adjectives come to mind, and they are all
superlatives! To take Ezra Pound's cautionary phrase a step further, I would say, "Beware of calling anyone
a genius!" Preston Sturges, though, comes really darn close. He is the Orson Welles of comedy, and
this may well be his Citizen Kane. Oh, Preston, where art thou?!?

Thanks to the Austin Film Society and the Texas Union Theater for the screenings!
More comments anyone?
